Use For Levothyroxine Resource in Questions
Can use of generic drug levothyroxine instead of brand Synthroid(levothyroxine) cause problems? A friend has been using Synthroid (levothyroxine) 75mcg for many years. After few months of her starting the use of generic drug levothyroxine, her dosage had to be increased to 88mcg. Can generic drug be responsible for this increase in dosage requirement?
Lisa A replied: "Yes. You should never switch brands. Or at least if you do, you need to start with the blood tests, dosage adjustment, repeat every 6 weeks routine until you are stabilized all over again. Once you are stable again, you can gradually cut back on the testing, down to only once or twice a year. And don't switch brands again. Whatever generic you're on right now, stay on it."
levothyroxine? I was just prescribed with levothyroxine. I was taking sthyroid, my doc told me that my levels were very low. With levothyroxine will I be able to lose some weight? I don't like the way I look with all of this weight no matter what diet I go on, I still gain weight!!!
bt replied: "hypothyroidism can cause weight gain. levothyroxine is the generic version of synthroid, so they're the same thing (just probably saving you money). if your thyroid is still low, then the dose needs to be increased. hopefully your doc did that. it can take up to 6 weeks to see the (lab) results from the medicine. once your thyroid levels are under control you should lose some of the weight that results from hypothyroidism."
jano replied: "Synthroid is levothyroxine.
And yes, you can lose weight on the medication. Actually, untreated hypothyroidism can make weight loss harder.
So take your pills."
prarierosebud replied: "Levothyroxine does the same thing as synthroid. The only difference I can see is that it costs less. I think it is a generic so that's why."
bedros replied: "I agree with the previous posters. If the doctor felt your labs indicated that the dose was too low, he probably increased your dose of synthroid and the pharmacy filled it with another brand (or generic) levothyroxine. It takes a while to see physical changes from the medicine, so I agree with previous: stick to the plan.
Good luck"
I am going to take levothyroxine sodium for an underactive thyroid. How much should I take? I was informed of the problem when I was in the hospital for an unrelated injury and they ran some blood tests. This was over a year ago and I have demonstrated all of the symptoms of an under active thyroid over this past year. I am going to take levothyroxine sodium to combat the problem, however, I have no idea what to base the dosage amount on. Should I use weight, BMI, or something else? Thanks.
How long after starting to take Levothyroxine do you see symptoms improve? I was finally diagnosed with a hypoactive thryroid. (I say finally b/c I had exhibited symptoms for awhile, yet, my blood tests always came back fine. But, my last one finally showed the levels to be diagnosed. Also, both my mom & grandmother have it & I had all the same symptoms as them)
How long after starting to take Levothyroxine will I see my symptoms improve, like: always being cold, tired, hair loss & difficulty losing weight?
I hate that I'm so tired that I end up going to bed at 8pm, need to use a space heater (even in the summer), eating a really healthy diet & doing at least an hour of cardio a day yet still don't see the scale budge & my hair is wicked coarse & seems to fall out more than it used to.
Please do not suggest changing meds. b/c I asked my dr. & he said that this is the best one for me (&, it's also the same one's my other family members are on too, so I know it works for the type we have)
If I drink a hot beverage right after taking my levothyroxine pill, will the medication still work? I just read today that levothyroxine is sensitive to heat. But is this a thing that occurs over time, like leaving the bottle in the car on a sunny afternoon?
duncan.cynthia@sbcglobal.net replied: "If you drunk something that was hot like hot chocolate then it shouldn't
have no effect on you; But if you drink things with caffine it like coffee it
may wash out the med you've put in your body and defeat the purpose of
it working: So it is best to ask questions' about that the next time you see your doctor cause you want the med to work and not defeat the purpose of it working: Never leave until you know are get a good answer
on how the med work when you drink are eat something:...Cause the worse thing you could do to yourself is cause the med to revert and make
yourself throw up the pill and the drink that you've taken."
How fast does it take Levothyroxine to work? I recently found out I have hypothyrodism, through routine bloodwork. I have no symptoms. I started 75mg of Levothyroxine on August 21st and am getting my TSH level retested on September 8th, 19 days later. My TSH level was 8.0. I know everyone is different, but can I expect to see any difference in my TSH level on the 8th?
Is it safe to take Prozac whilst being on Levothyroxine? My doctor wants me to take Prozac for Depression/OCD but I am also taking Levothyroxine for an under-active thyroid. Does anyone know from personal experience if this is a good idea or not? My doctor seems a bit vague on the whole subject.
jack of all trades replied: "Call your pharmacist and ask her/him. I would also call the doctor and tell him you want a definitive answer."
munchkin replied: "Your GP, wouldn't give you both drugs if there were any known problems with mixing the two."
Affy007 replied: "Seems like it is safe. From drugs. com:
"fluoxetine(Prozac) and levothyroxine (Minor Drug-Drug)
Case reports suggest that thyroid hormone supplementation may enhance the therapeutic effects of fluoxetine in the treatment of major depression. The mechanism is unknown.""
How bad is it to skip a dose of levothyroxine? If one dose is fine to miss, how many aren't? my husband failed to fill my prescription for levothyroxine and the pharmacy I get it from is closed today (Saturday) so I am concerned about the repercussions of skipping a dose or two. Please help. Thank you in advance.
Why is my appetite increasing on levothyroxine? I'm on 0.25 mcg. I've been on it a couple of weeks and I do feel quite a bit better mentally and physically already, but my appetite has increased a whole lot. I thought levothyroxine was supposed to decrease the appetite a little bit. I'm confused here.
Is anybody aware of how long it takes for levothyroxine to leave the body? I was prescribed levothyroxine when weight problems occurred but now I have developed all the symptoms of what looks like an overdose of it, e.g flushing, diarrhoea, palpitations, intolerance to heat ect., I stopped it a week ago - anybody know when I should expect an improvement?
Lisa A replied: "About 8 hours."
lab rat replied: "The half life is around a week - meaning it would take a week for the levels to reduce by half. You probably would not feel a diference in that time. For the medication to leave your body completely would take at least a month. But if you think you don't need it or are on too high a dose, it's much better to see your doctor and get a blood test to get your dose adjusted properly. -%20Monographs/CPS-%20(General%20Monographs-%20E)/ELTROXIN.html"
